Sierra Leone, Bo: It's done! 3 projects completed with direct help from Oldenburg.
November 2024
The public water points at the borehole, at the storage building and at the hospital have now been in operation for almost 2 years - fed by the borehole financed by Noma Hilfe Schweiz. Under the supervision of Kai, an employee of Gila Hospital, residents can fetch water in the mornings and evenings. And the offer is being actively used. The water analyses carried out several times have shown that no waterflow is currently required, as the water consumption is so high that the water does not remain in the pipes or the tank for long. A waterflow is still available on site and can be installed if required.

Info from Musa, the National Director of Hilfe direkt Sierra Leone
"As for the water from the borehole, we carry out regular tests. However, there was a time when the Ministry of Water and Sanitation tested all wells owned by private and commercial organizations due to an outbreak of typhoid. Most facilities were no longer allowed to provide water, but ours passed the test and was even recognized as the purest in all of Bo City. We are now proud to serve our patients in the hospital and we have banned fetching water outside the hospital while they are in the hospital for treatment.

Both the hospital and dental station projects are running smoothly. In the meantime, a new dentist has been hired. Clean drinking water is a prerequisite and is now guaranteed. In the hospital, patients, their families who come as visitors and the employees are supplied with drinking water. Water analyses are also carried out here regularly and the water tank on the roof of the hospital is cleaned regularly.
A big thank you to everyone involved for their efforts to significantly improve the availability and quality of water in this area of Bo.
Sierra Leone, Bo: Completion work on the water supply facilities
April 2022
After Corona slowed everything down, work could be resumed and largely completed in 2021 and 2022

In collaboration, a pipeline was laid from the borehole to the various water points.

Not only the hospital and the dental station can now be supplied with water

but also the 3 public water points for the residents, who are obviously happy about it.

Two Waterflow systems - perfectly prepared by volunteers from Hilfe Direkt Oldenburg in DE - were connected to the water tank on the roof of the Gila Hospital and to the tank of the dental station. Patients of both institutions, employees and visitors can thus be supplied with clean drinking water.
The third Waterflow unit delivered to Bo is planned for the public water point at the borehole. It will be used if the water samples should confirm the need and if a solution can be found for the power supply of the plant without risk of theft.

Sierra Leone, Bo: Clean drinking water for the Gila Hospital
In an exemplary collaboration between Noma Hilfe Switzerland (NHS) and aqua pura, two important steps towards this goal have been realized so far. All sanitary facilities in the hospital were renovated with donations from the NHS as a prerequisite for the supply of water. The existing old 3'000 l tank was replaced by a 10'000 l tank on the roof of the hospital financed by aqua pura. In a second phase the NHS financed the drilling for water as a basis for a sustainable and safe water supply of the hospital. Unfortunately, only the 3rd drilling was successful! But fortunately, only a small part of the 2 unsuccessful drillings directly at the hospital had to be paid. Since the bubbling borehole is 450 m away from the hospital, the completion of the well with the pump as well as the supply line from the well to the hospital is still pending. As soon as the rainy season is over, this last stage of the joint project will be completed. Whether the rest of the spoken financing by Noma Hilfe Schweiz will be sufficient for this, will be shown after the requested offer has been received. Finally, the use of the aqua pura Waterflow system will ensure that the water from the borehole, after being transported through the supply line and stored in the large tank, will meet the requirements for healthy drinking water.
Aqua pura thanks - also in the name of the supporting association of the hospital Hilfe direkt Oldenburg / Sierra Leone and Noma Hilfe Schweiz for the generous support of the drinking water project in the sense of prevention of diseases like Noma.
